"The development industry is integral to every province's history. In $100,000 an Acre, Doug Kelly brings a colorful perspective to this history - for both Calgary and Edmonton."
MAYOR STEPHEN MANDEL, Edmonton, April 2009
"Doug, I've had a chance to read your book and wanted to thank you for writing it. As a younger member in the industry I found many of the stories interesting and entertaining. It also helped me fill in some of the blanks.
JODIE WACKO ACP, MCIP, Director Land Development, Beaverbrook Developments.
“I like the way you have ‘personalized’ people with the stories, rather than a litany of stats and facts – in my opinion you have really captured the essence of each character and made them real and interesting.“
RUDY KOOP Strathcona County.
Doug Kelly was born in Alberta and raised on a farm in Saskatchewan. He returned to Alberta in 1968 after graduating from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor of science in civil engineering. After spending a few years in some unsatisfying jobs, a chance meeting with university friend Ralph Young got him into his lifelong career and love.
Doug spent 36 years in land development, which gave him an inside view of its history from a developers perspective. During his career, Doug worked for four development companies and one land development consulting company in Calgary and Edmonton, with a short stint in Toronto. He has chaired both the Calgary and Edmonton chapters of the Urban Development Institute, and served as president of the Alberta division - the only member to have held all three posts. Doug and his wife, Lindsay, live in Edmonton. They have four children and two grandchildren.
